Also known as Rudreshwara Temple, Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple
A 13th-century Kakatiya Shiva temple at Palampet, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 and famous for its finely carved sculpture.
History
The Rudreshwara temple, popularly called Ramappa after its chief sculptor, was built in the early 13th century during the reign of the Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva. It is the only temple in India widely known by the name of its architect. Its inscription records its consecration by the Kakatiya general Recharla Rudra.
Architecture
The temple stands on a raised star-shaped platform. Its walls, pillars and ceilings carry intricate carvings, and the bracket figures (madanikas) on the outer pillars are among the most celebrated examples of Kakatiya sculpture. UNESCO notes the use of a sandbox technique for the foundation and lightweight bricks in the superstructure.
